How do we inspire our children to continue their education? I was discussing parenting with a colleague that is a mother of young children. I was explaining how all through my children's early years in school, I would remind them that when they got to college they were going to need the information, or the skill they were learning.  We talked about a parent's ability to set the expectation early that it is important to go to college. The colleague said she was going to remember that idea, as she wasn't raised hearing that message. A few months later, she told me a story.
On my way home today after picking my kindergartener up from school, I glanced in the rear view mirror.  I saw his hand making detailed shapes in the air.  Son, what are you doing?  He replied, "When I go to college, I am going to invent lower case numbers.  There are upper case letters and lower case letters.  We need lower case numbers.  I know how they should look and I am practicing them. (Baker 2010)
He could be right.  Maybe we do need lower case numbers. I am glad he has a mom that has given him the message he can go to college and create new ideas.

  1. Today, I was visiting with colleague whose son is now second grade. He posed the question: Why do moms cry when their children go to college? My friend explained that moms are so proud of what their child has accomplished and the new adventure they will be undertaking. Of course, moms will their children at college. He replied, you can come and live with me. The internal message continues to grow and take form. Hooray for moms (and dads).

  2. Your posting brought a tear to my eye as I look at my soon to be four year old, and think about all of the questions and stories she comes up with. Children are so intelligent and their imaginations soar every given day.

  3. I think that this story is very inspiring. I do not yet have children, but I have discussed the importance of education with my soon to be husband and how I want to place an emphasis on our children's education. With regard to your story, there is a quote that I have come across several times, "children should be taught how to think and not what to think." Colleges should encourage their students to challenge traditional theories with ideas of their own, challenge classmates and faculty to think about what they are being taught in their discipline and most of all, support the alternative idea and theory - even if it challenges long standing credible theorists. College should be encouraged from the beginning in order to set our children up for success. Thank you for sharing.
